Climate crisis in the Himalayas: addressing the threat of melting glaciers in Northern Pakistan
22 Mar 2024 / In the majestic landscapes of Northern Pakistan, a silent catastrophe is unfolding. Rising temperatures have taken a toll on the Hindu Kush, Karakoram, and Himalayan glaciers, causing them to melt at an alarming rate. As a result, glacial lakes have emerged, shimmering like jewels amidst the rugged terrain. Risks and recognition These glacial lakes pose a significant risk of flooding events, capable of unleashing devastation upon the land and its people. Over seven million people live in the shadow of an impending disaster.
GCF and FAO break record in signing fastest ever project agreement, supporting climate-vulnerable Pakistan farmers
09 Jul 2019 / In a sign of accelerating climate finance flows, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) has signed an agreement to implement a project by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to enhance the climate resilience of farmers in Pakistan’s Indus Basin. GCF signed the Funded Activity Agreement (FAA) to transfer USD 35 million to the FAO project yesterday, less than 24 hours after it was approved by the GCF Board. The signing represents the fastest progression from project funding approval to a funding implementation agreement during GCF’s four years of operation.
Second phase of flood control project to launch this year
28 May 2018 / He stated that after completing the first phase of the five-year Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) project in 2015, the United Nation’s Green Climate Fund had in October 2016, approved $36 million for a second phase of the GLOF project.
