RE-ACT (Resilient Action Guyana): Increasing climate resilience of vulnerable ecosystems and rural communities in Guyana’s coastal areas
RE-ACT (Resilient Action Guyana): Increasing climate resilience of vulnerable ecosystems and rural communities in Guyana’s coastal areas
Natural dynamics of the coastal zone are being influenced by climate change (CC) owing to increased mean annual temperature and precipitation that lead to unpredictable floods and drought periods which are expected to worsen according to CC projections. In light of the vulnerability of Guyana’s coastal region, the proposed project supports the Government of Guyana (GoG) in increasing the resilience of vulnerable coastal ecosystems and local rural and indigenous communities to the effects of CC by investing in i) capacity building and technology transfer on sustainable agricultural practices to address water-related threats from CC and; ii) strengthening technical capacity of local institutions and rural organisations to improve water and agricultural systems management. The project will directly benefit 40,000 vulnerable small and medium sized farmers, of which nearly 50% female, in the coastal region of Guyana (Regions 2 to 6). Upon the GoG’s request, this project has FAO-Guyana as Accredited Entity and will be executed by the Ministry of Agriculture and FAO as Executing Entities.
