Strengthening the institutional capacities of the African Island States Climate Commission (AISCC) member states to manage climate risks and bolster resilience - RESIslands Project

Cabo Verde, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles and Tanzania (Zanzibar) are the member states the of the African Island States Climate Commission (AISCC). These countries are situated in regions that are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. As a result, they face a range of climate- related challenges, including sea-level rise, increased storm intensity, coastal erosion, ocean acidification, desertification and water scarcity, cyclones, flash floods and changing rainfall patterns, among others. These impacts have severe consequences for their economies, ecosystems, and overall well- being.

Relevant Policies, Plans and Institutional Arrangements:

National Adaptation Plans (NAPs): The target countries have developed National Adaptation Plans to address their vulnerabilities and adapt to climate change impacts. These plans outline strategies and actions to reduce climate risks and build resilience in key sectors such as agriculture, water resources, and infrastructure.

National Climate Change Strategies: The AISCC countries have developed comprehensive climate change strategies that encompass mitigation and adaptation measures. These strategies aim to mainstream climate considerations into national development planning.

International Agreements: These countries are signatories to international agreements such as the Paris Agreement, through which they commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing their adaptive capacity.

Regional Initiatives: Some of these island states are part of regional organizations and initiatives that focus on integration, climate change adaptation and resilience building. The AISCC is one of them. Others are the Blue Wall Initiative, the AfCTA, and the SIDS AIS Region.
