Land-based Mitigation and Adaptation through a Jurisdictional Approach in West Kalimantan
Land-based Mitigation and Adaptation through a Jurisdictional Approach in West Kalimantan
Indonesia’s West Kalimantan Province faces critical climate hazards such as deforestation, forest degradation, rising temperatures, floods, and droughts. These hazards particularly affect the province’s peatland ecosystems, which store large amounts of carbon but are highly vulnerable to fire and degradation. Local communities, reliant on natural resources, lack resilience mechanisms, especially regarding forest management and agricultural practices.
The project aims to empower local communities through sustainable forest management and climate-resilient agricultural practices, focusing on five key regencies in West Kalimantan: Kapuas Hulu, Ketapang, Kubu Raya, Sanggau, and Sintang. It also aims to implement various institutional, technical, and financial interventions that enhance land use governance, increase community participation, and create sustainable economic opportunities. This includes dedicated financing mechanisms for Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
The permanent changes in the country will involve institutional reforms that improve livelihoods, protect ecosystems, and strengthen sustainable land management by integrating climate resilience into development plans, empowering local communities, and establishing sustainable commodity supply chains that foster low-emission and climate-resilient agricultural practices.
