Securing a healthy future for people and planet with GCF

#ForPeopleForPlanet #ClimateAction

Human beings and nature are invariably interconnected. The scale of the response efforts required to stem the global COVID-19 pandemic illustrates that, as with the climate crisis, viruses know no borders.

At this crucial juncture in history, embarking on a sustainable path of green growth is necessary for both people and the planet to recover. Across the globe, Green Climate Fund (GCF) financed projects are mitigating the impacts of climate change and strengthening the climate resilience of vulnerable communities. GCF is working closely with developing countries to explore new climate investment opportunities that have strong social and economic co-benefits. Having a healthy planet is linked to the well-being of people and contributes to attaining prosperity for all.

As the global community commemorates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this year, it’s more important than ever to invest in climate-smart initiatives that enhance people’s resilience, protect the planet and promote inclusive, low-carbon development.

We're all in this together.

GCF is working with partners in a flexible manner to respond to the far-reaching impacts of the pandemic and support developing countries to enhance their resilience in sustainable ways to overcome the double burden of the pandemic and the climate crisis.

Breathing the same air.

Studies show that people living with poor air quality may be more susceptible to COVID-19. In Mongolia, GCF catalysed funding for the Sumber Solar plant, the first large-scale solar plant financed by a local bank in the country. This solar plant averts 12,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

Sharing one home.

Healthy ecosystems are crucial to fighting climate change and preventing the emergence of zoonotic diseases like COVID-19. GCF is helping Ecuador achieve its goal of net zero deforestation to protect the biodiverse ecosystem of the Amazon while improving the livelihoods of indigenous peoples and communities.

We're with you.

COVID-19 disproportionately affects people who lack access to basic services and social safety nets. In Rwanda, about 70% of people are not connected to the main electricity grid. GCF is partnering with Acumen on a project that provides rural communities with clean energy through off-grid solar panels. Reliable 24/7 access to renewable energy is key to stemming, responding to and recovering from the pandemic.

Let's rebuild with care.

GCF invests in climate-resilient infrastructure for sustainable water management. Improving the water security of farmers who are affected by climate-induced drought builds their capacity to adapt to the impacts of climate change and also strengthens their resilience to COVID-19.

For people. For our planet.

GCF is committed to ensuring that the world that emerges from the pandemic is one that is more aligned on a climate-smart path. GCF catalyses green investments that can help developing countries relaunch their economies on low-emissions, climate-resilient development pathways.
