Jeans that don’t cost the earth

29 Mar 2024 / In partnership with the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union, this USD 1.4 billion (USD 378 million in GCF financing) Green Climate Fund project supports Emessa, a denim producer based in Egypt, pioneering energy-efficient ready-made garments in Egypt. This is achieved by installing a new production line, which has reduced the company’s energy consumption by about 28 per cent and cut its CO2 emissions by 46 tonnes a year. The company also managed to decrease its water consumption by 50 per cent.

Note in relation to readiness activities in DPRK

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is required to comply with United Nations Sanctions Council (UNSC) regimes pertaining to financial sanctions. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), being the Delivery partner in connection with the readiness grant proposal submitted an exemption request to the UN Security Council Committee established pursuant to Resolution 1718 (2006), to oversee the UNSC sanctions measures imposed on the DPRK.

FAO informed the GCF of the Committee’s decision to decline the sanctions exemption request. As a result, implementation of this readiness grant is currently suspended.

Cuba's coastal communities fight climate change

04 Jun 2025 / In the coastal neighbourhood of Litoral in Manzanillo, Cuba, the sea is both a lifeline and a threat. Every time a storm darkens the sky, families like Martha Labrada’s brace for evacuation. And even on calm days, saltwater seeps silently into the land, corroding house foundations and tainting freshwater wells. “The water almost always enters this area,” says Labrada, aged 65, who has led the community council here for more than a decade. “The houses were built too close to the sea, and the mangroves are deforested.”

GCF joins initiative to help Africa expand its REDD+ roots

23 Aug 2019 / The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is helping REDD+ gain a stronger foothold in Africa by joining the first initiative to promote a regional approach to using payments to keep forests standing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. GCF staff joined more than 60 REDD+ experts and country representatives from 22 African countries at a workshop in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, on 13 to 15 August to explore challenges and opportunities in boosting African REDD+ action at local, national and regional levels.

Caribbean countries launch landmark platform to scale up climate investment

16 Jun 2025 / The creation of a platform to accelerate the mobilisation of finance for the boosting of resilience across the Caribbean region was announced today. The landmark Regional Platform for catalyzing Resilience and Climate Action in the Caribbean aims to identify and deliver country-focused game-changing investment opportunities while enhancing a regional approach to resilience building in the era of a climate crisis.

Pioneering Barbados water project kick starts

14 Mar 2025 / The Green Climate Fund and the Government of Barbados today announced that a groundbreaking project that leverages an innovative financing model to scale up climate action and simultaneously avoid increasing the burden of public debt is all set to begin implementation. The pioneering project, with huge positive implications for climate resilience in the region, was today greenlighted for its first injection of GCF finance.

Barbados launches the world's first debt-for-climate-resilience conversion

03 Dec 2024 / The deal generated USD 125 million in fiscal savings which will be channeled into new resilience investments. The debt conversion represents an innovative financing model for climate adaptation that avoids increasing the burden of public debt.

23 Jun 2023 / The Government of Barbados announced at the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact in Paris an integrated package of innovative initiatives to accelerate its transition to net zero, boost resilience, enfranchise workers, and draw in private sector investment while prudently managing public debt levels. These initiatives build on the ongoing climate policy reforms, supported by the Resilience and Sustainability Facility with the International Monetary Fund, which are expected to play a catalytic role in mobilizing private and public sector financing for climate projects.

Barbados signs privileges and immunities agreement with GCF

13 May 2019 / The government of Barbados has signed an agreement with GCF granting it privileges and immunities in line with those of other international organisations and those applied in the United Nations system. The agreement was signed in Bridgetown by Jerome Walcott, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados, in the presence of Marsha Caddle, Minister for Economic Affairs and Investment.

Mobilising financing for agricultural technologies: seeding a climate resilient and food-secure future
